ANT Galio Move enables a smartphone or tablet device running the ANT Galio Move application to act as a “second screen” companion device for a Move-enabled TV or set-top box anywhere in the home, extending the capabilities of todays’ TVs and STBs beyond the living room.
The ANT Galio Move application running on a companion device connects directly to the TV or set-top box using Wi-Fi, enabling consumers to stream live TV or recorded programmes, manage recordings, access additional programme information and quickly navigate through the EPG without disrupting viewing on the main TV screen.
The intuitive touch screen user interface can be customised to match the brand of the device or service that it controls, providing a consistent user experience across multiple devices.
By connecting directly to the set-top box or TV, ANT Galio Move can provide additional programme information based on what the user is currently watching without having to connect to an online service. This connection also means that the application can provide up-to-date information about recordings or VOD purchases.
ANT Galio Move provides significant product differentiation in a crowded retail market by enabling STB and connected TV manufacturers to extend the capabilities of their device with second screen functionality that complements the main TV device. An extra screen for streamed TV, combined with a more intuitive user interface for discovering content, presents a compelling reason to purchase a TV device compatible with the ANT Galio Move application. It can also generate new revenue opportunities though the sale of application downloads and in-app advertising.
For broadcasters and operators, ANT Galio Move can enhance and add value to an existing service. The UI can be customised to highlight the functionality that they wish to promote to their users. Additional, extended metadata about programmes can be made available to users without adding excessive information on the main TV screen, and taking full advantage of the format and usage model of a companion device.
FEATURES & FUNCTIONALITY
Live TV and Recorded Streaming
A key feature of the application is the ability to stream live and recorded content to the companion device. This opens up a wide range of viewing scenarios that have previously not been possible. For example:
When watching a football match, for example, you can take the game with you while you make a cup of tea, meaning you never miss a kick. Simply press the ‘Watch Here’ button on the companion device’s touch screen UI. The match will continue to play on the main TV as the rest of the family continues to watch while you can watch it in parallel on the companion device.
Perhaps you’re not interested in the football at all and want to watch something different. If that’s the case, simply select another channel or recorded programme and stream it to the companion device instead. The main TV remains unaffected and you have access to the same selection of live and recorded programmes to view on the companion device.
Uninterrupted TV Viewing
ANT Galio Move provides off-screen functionality which allows whatever is being watched on the main TV screen to remain uninterrupted. Users can search the EPG, view existing recordings and schedule new recordings, and set reminders using the companion device, all without disrupting what is being watched on the main TV.
The ANT Galio Move application capitalises on the benefits of a touch screen user interface to increase ease of use. Navigating eight days of EPG data becomes easy when you can skip to your chosen date by pressing one button on a fast, intuitive user interface. Similarly, jumping to a specific point in a programme or recording becomes much easier when a scrub bar can be used to find the right place, rather than skipping forwards or backwards by fixed amounts.
The application can also act as a remote control, enabling users to fully control the receiver from their companion device.
Social Media Integration and Associated Content
Users can watch live and recorded TV on a companion device with Twitter or Facebook integrated into the viewing experience. The direct connection with the TV device enables the ANT Galio Move application to identify what the consumer is watching and to suggest Twitter hashtags relevant to the programme that is being viewed based on the programme metadata. From here, the user can follow the hashtag and join in by tweeting about the programme or tweet to their own social network about what they’re watching.
When watching TV the application uses programme metadata to provide additional content to the user from a variety of online sources such as Wikipedia, YouTube and iTunes based on what the user is watching. This can be extended to include additional information from sources chosen by the device manufacturer or service operator.
